There is a captivating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling den wagering is against the law. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent spot, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; however, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of many borders.

The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge casino, highlights one hundred and fifty slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel compound that features a number of conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which contains 10,000 square feet of 130 slots and 88 table games.
