There is a captivating story to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, where gambling den gambling is banned. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime spot, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and even though visas are supposedly required to cross, there are methods around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.
The original Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the common tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational vacation and hotel complex that features many conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight table games.
